The main theme of PAQS Congress 2022 is Disruption and Transformation in the Built Environment.

The construction sector has existed for thousands of years when human settlements started.  This long history also makes it traditional practices so ingrained that changes and innovations are not easily embraced.  The theme of this congress is to break out of this mould, to adopt disruptive technologies to improve the construction industry.  The adoption of new technologies need to go hand in hand with transformative delivery.  The old design-bid-build model may need to be overhauled, to take in emerging technologies such as virtual reality, block chain and artificial intelligence.  This engenders changes in the way quantity surveyors work, and some job redesign may be necessary.  Built facilities that are developed based on disruptive and transformative technologies also need to be sustainable and give occupants a sense of wellness and liveability.

The sub-themes are:

1. Disruptive Technologies

What are the disruptions that the built environment (BE) sector is encountering?  Industry and academia are invited to share their experience and findings on disruptive technologies, which may include how to establish a robust Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) eco-system, how to enable widespread adoption of DfMA, how to incentivize designers to design upfront for ease of manufacturing and assembly.  With cut-throat price competition, would disruptive technologies make sense to contractors, encourage them to adopt highly automated offsite production facilities, and efficient and clean on-site installation process?

2. Transformative Delivery

Industry and academics are invited to share insights on transformative delivery systems and new procurement systems in the BE sector.  Case studies on the importance of collaborative spirit between the project owner and other stakeholder, the critical success and failure criteria in the adoption of transformative delivery systems, e.g. Building Information Modelling (BIM), info-communications technology (ICT), Collaborative Contracting (CC) and smart technologies are welcomed.  How would the role of quantity surveyors change if Integrated Design Delivery (IDD) to fully integrate processes and stakeholders along the value chain is adopted?  Would IDD help in ensuring better differentiation of quality, greater transparency and greater collaboration among firms?

3. Green and Wellness

What are the key features for buildings to be liveable? What are the smart infrastructure, sustainable development or people-centricity features in buildings that are green and well? We look forward to research findings and case studies on how buildings are designed to consider the human condition and the evolving needs of various communities, and to promote health and well-being. What are the transformative design for Green Buildings and sustainable practices in operations and maintenance?

4. QS and Cost Management Service Transformation

With disruption and transformation, what are the new roles, job functions and responsibilities of quantity surveyors?  How would contractual and financial advising be different or emphasized when the paradigm shifts from traditional framework to a digital and smart environment?  What can be done to redesign jobs in the BE sector in general, and QS sector in particular to add value and be future proof?  How can we re-engineer jobs such that they require higher skills, pay more competitive salaries and have a better working environment?  How can core skills be built up and deepen to value proposition of quantity surveyors?  In the age of disruption and transformation, how can we attract more graduates to join the BE sector? Papers that address these issues are welcomed.

Delegates who are interested in presenting a paper for one of the parallel sessions are encouraged to submit an abstract via email (abstracts@paqs2022.com)

Please read the following guide thoroughly before developing your abstract and submitting it. The abstract will be considered for the most suitable sub-theme.

The “Best Paper Awards” will be given to the best papers presented at the Congress. The Scientific and Technical Committee will nominate the papers to an advisory committee of respected scholars who will evaluate them based on the blind peer review system. The papers’ relevance to the Congress’ scope, its scientific contribution, writing/presentation style will be considered in the evaluation process.
